How a Baton Rouge mold removal job is ordered

The call. You describe what you are seeing, where, and whether water has been in the building.

The independent assessment. A firm with no part in the removal visits, traces the moisture, maps the growth, samples where a sample answers a real question, and writes the scope.

The remediation. A separate remediation contractor prices and carries out that scope: containment, removal of affected material, cleaning, treating and drying what stays.

The check. Before the rooms are closed up, they are looked at again by someone other than the contractor who did the work.

The rebuild. Drywall, insulation, flooring and finishes go back, priced on their own line.

Mold removal and the Louisiana rules this site follows

Louisiana makes it a violation for a mold remediation contractor to perform both mold assessment and mold remediation on the same property, or to own an interest in both entities (La. R.S. 37:2158(A)(23)). The same subsection requires a written report to each person the contractor works for. Mold remediation with a project value of $7,500 or more needs the state mold remediation license issued by the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors (La. R.S. 37:2150.1); to get it, an applicant has to prove at least twenty-four hours of training covering mold remediation and basic mold assessment (La. R.S. 37:2156.1).

The Louisiana Department of Health adds the homeowner's side: in most cases it does not recommend testing for mold, Louisiana has no set standards for mold levels, and mold usually will not grow if wet areas are dried within 24 to 48 hours. The copy on every page of this site is written to those sources.

What to ask any mold removal contractor

  • Will a different, independent firm do the assessment and the final check?
  • For a job of $7,500 or more, what is your state mold remediation license number?
  • Once we have a contract, will you give me in writing your name, license number, classification and current insurance certificates? Louisiana requires that on request (La. R.S. 37:2158(A)(15)).
  • Is the containment written into the scope, and is the rebuild priced separately?
  • Will I get a written report at the end?

Questions about Baton Rouge Mold Removal

Does Baton Rouge Mold Removal do both the inspection and the removal?

No. Louisiana law does not allow one company to assess and remediate the same property, so the assessment comes from an independent firm and the removal from a separate remediation contractor. Call (225) 422-7176 to start with the assessment.

Why does Louisiana separate mold assessment from removal?

The statute does not give its reasons, but the effect is that the firm sizing the problem has no stake in the size of the removal. Call (225) 422-7176 to see how that works on your job.

Can I use my own contractor for the rebuild?

Yes. The rebuild is priced on its own line, so you can bring in your own drywall, flooring or tile trade if you prefer. Call (225) 422-7176 to talk through the scope.

How do I check a mold remediation contractor?

Ask for the state mold remediation license number in writing and look it up with the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors; for jobs of $7,500 or more the license is required. Call (225) 422-7176 with any questions.

What should I have ready for the assessment?

Access to the attic and any crawl space, a list of leaks or floods the house has had, and any earlier reports from a sale or an insurance claim. Call (225) 422-7176 to book the visit.

Which parishes are covered?

All of East Baton Rouge, Livingston and Ascension parishes. If the property sits just beyond those, ring (225) 422-7176 and ask about it.
