Why Baton Rouge attics grow mold
Fans venting into the attic. The most common cause and the cheapest to fix. Bathroom exhaust fans and sometimes dryer vents that end in the attic instead of through the roof or wall pump warm wet air onto the roof deck every day.
Roof leaks. Around vents, chimneys and flashing, and after storm damage; a lot of Baton Rouge roofs were patched in a hurry after Gustav and again after Ida and are leaking now. The leak wets the deck and the insulation, and in a Baton Rouge summer the attic never dries.

How attic mold is removed
Seal the attic from the house. The attic hatch is sealed into a plastic airlock and an air machine keeps the attic under suction and filtered, so nothing comes down through the ceiling fixtures.
Remove contaminated insulation. Wet or mouldy insulation is bagged and taken out; it cannot be cleaned. Where it is only the top layer under a leak, only that comes out.
Clean the deck and framing. The underside of the roof deck, the rafters and the top of the ceiling joists are cleaned by media blasting or scrubbing, vacuumed with filtered equipment and treated with an antimicrobial. Staining that is left is dead growth, sealed in.
Fix the cause. Fans re-routed through the roof or a gable wall, the leak repaired, soffit vents cleared and baffles fitted, a ridge or powered vent added. This is in the quote because the removal is temporary without it.
Dry, test, re-insulate. Dehumidifiers until the deck reads dry, an air test on a large job, then new insulation.
